I recently attended OFFF in Barcelona and fell in love with hats again.
Just outside the main building, there was a small design market where I picked up the striped canvas bag from Hey Shop, a couple of logo books from Counterprint Books, and tried on way too many Laser Barcelona hats at the OMG BCN.
5-panel hats were everywhere, especially at the festival. I remember years ago Benny Gold released a range of Pendleton 5-panel hats, and probably due to postage/customs charges I never ordered one. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I could pull one off. You couldn’t really find them in Ireland to try on.
Holding one (or ten) in hand in Barcelona and trying them on, it’s hard not to like the 5-panel design, it’s such a comfortable hat to wear, unstructured, but holds just enough shape. A decent wide brim to protect from the sun. I was hooked and started to do my research.
Between custom Air Max 1 projects, I saw an opportunity to try something new with my post-bed sewing machine. I purchased a pattern, cut up an old pair of denim jeans, and pieced the panels together. It turned out terrible, and I wasn’t sure if it was a me problem, or if the pattern just wasn’t quite what I was looking for. I purchased a few hats, decided what I liked about each one, took them apart, and then tested and tweaked a number of patterns to develop my own.
It’s far from perfect, and I plan to use a softer brim, but this is the first “finished” test hat that I’m genuinely happy with – all black canvas for now. It’s missing a few structural touches at the moment, but it’s super comfortable and I think I nailed the shape. With a bit of branding and a few material variations, this is going to be a new favourite.
I’m very open to partnerships, so if you are a supplier of shoemaking tools, materials, or products and would like to partner up to promote them through our various social channels, feel free to get in touch.
