After an impressive rookie season wearing adidas Basketball’s Feet You Wear models (Top Ten 2000, Top Ten 2010 and EQT Elevation, to name a few), Kobe received his first signature sneaker during his second year in the league. The KB8 featured a distinct curved design, mirroring Kobe’s on-court charisma.

Part of the Feet You Wear lineup, the KB8’s contoured edges aimed to keep the player close to the ground for enhanced responsiveness and agility. Its technical prowess, including mesh lining, inner bootie construction, EVA midsole, and Torsion system plate, made it one of the most advanced basketball shoes on the market. Later renamed as the Crazy 8, this iconic sneaker was re-released in 2007 and remains a cherished part of adidas’ retro collection.

Sequels don’t always disappoint, and the KB8 II proved just that. While perhaps not as revered as its predecessor, this shoe played a crucial role in Kobe’s ascent to superstardom. By his third season, Kobe had become adidas Basketball’s poster boy, appearing in various unforgettable ad campaigns.

To accommodate the increased playing time and rising demand on the court, the KB8 II featured a larger rounded midsole, providing added stability and support. This classic silhouette made a comeback in 2014, reminding fans of its enduring appeal.

It’s hard to ignore the prominence of the Feet You Wear models during Kobe’s adidas era, and the KB8 III marked the final entry in this line. The shoe’s sleek appearance, with a smoother leather construction and subtle detailing, set it apart as a stylish yet functional option.

Tragically, a licensing dispute led to adidas discontinuing models using the Feet You Wear technology. Fortunately, the KB8 III’s design elements found a new life in the popular Yeezy 500, thanks to Kanye West’s appreciation for this classic sneaker.

The termination of the Feet You Wear line marked a turning point for Kobe and adidas. Before the ill-fated Kobe 2, the original Kobe 1 made its debut, becoming one of the most daring basketball shoes of its time.

With its futuristic, boxy appearance, the Kobe 1 departed from the bulbous design of its predecessors in favour of a bold aesthetic that divided sneaker enthusiasts. Inspired by the Audi TT Roadster, the shoe boasted a double foam collar, half-shell toe, injection-moulded EVA midsole, and Torsion system for optimal performance.

Kobe himself was a big fan of the Kobe 1, wearing it during the latter half of the 2000 season, which culminated in him winning his first championship. He continued to sport the Kobe 1 throughout the 2001 Finals and secured his second championship, etching his legacy into basketball history.
